HISTORY

Wrea Green Tennis Club

68 Years & Counting

WGTC WAS FOUNDED IN 1956

In the early 1950’s members of Wrea Green Youth Club had been enjoying playing tennis, by invitation, on the front lawn of the Birley family’s house which is now the The Villa, Wrea Green. This was a beautifully manicured grass court.

On the death of Mrs Birley, the family wanted to provide a tennis facility for the village and donated the land on which the club now stands in Mill Lane.

Many fundraising events were held and one hard tarmac court was finally laid and opened in 1956 when Wrea Green Tennis Club was formally founded.

A second court was added only a few years later and finally a third court completed the development

JOIN OUR AMAZING COMMUNITY

The club has gone from strength to strength and has around 200 members entering teams both senior and junior in local leagues. The club holds its annual tournament over the summer months and some of the trophies date back to the original first competitive club events. In addition to this, Wrea Green Tennis Club is also affiliated with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Our club also has a fantastic committee made up of club volunteers who take care of and organise events and club welfare throughout the year. You can view a current list of our committee members by visiting our Committee page.
